Waking Up 03:30
So you say there's something you want to see, and you want to see it right now. Looking at the sun all day gets blinding. Sometimes you've gotta look down. Well it seems it's all over, it's done. Nothing more to say, my empty one. You're all holy now with your rosary; I don't like the way you look through them at me. Waking up...waking up is not so easy. Waking up...waking up can be a bit much. And I wake up to the sound of heartbeats. A circle of people looking down then up. Did you mean to happen what has happened? Did you mean it to happen to me? Waking up...

Eiffel Tower 03:10
I used to never want to stay. I never had to try this hard before. And so I'm gonna go away. I wanna see the world (at least that's what I say...) I know that I won't be the same. Some people tell me this is a bad depression; I think it has a different name. But I don't speak the language, how would I say: I never saw the Eiffel Tower. I'd rather have an eyeful of you any day. It's strange after you went away. (That's when you started crowding me.) I wish you'd back away, or that you'd come and stay, or just get on a train to the Champs Elysees. I never saw the Eiffel...

If you think I look bad, you should have seen the other guy. You think this is so sad, but you can't remember why. I have a gnawing feeling this is not the way to go. Which tangle of voices should I listen to; I don't know./You decided some time ago not to have any more sunny days. And you've been true, true, true to what you said. Knocking on doors looking for someone to forgive you, and it seems that you'll be rap tap tapping for centuries./If you think I look bad, you should have seen the other guy. I look sad, bewildered, yeah. But he's over there in a pile. Go drape your bodies over him; go on and kiss it away. But whatever you do, don't mention my name./You decided some time ago.../There there now.

Better Now 03:57
I'll be the tree, you can crawl up me like a vine. So entwined are we you can't tell yours from mine. There's only one way to be both master and slave. To bow down, rise up, and have it be all one and the same. There's an elixir that nobody talks about. Close your eyes, soon enough, the truth will come pouring out. I miss you baby, your mind is a wonderful show. But your body is the thing I want to wind up and make let go. And it'll be better now.

November 03:00
I'm bumping around in the dark in the middle of the day. I have a song stuck in my gullet; it wont' come out either way. The lights are all on at three, and it's too early yet to eat. November, no no no. If I didn't want a ring, why did I give you a hand? If you want it to be gone, just draw a line in the sand. If you wanted me to wait, why did you give me all this dark time? This can't be the same world the shines down and around me, like a dumb grin walking with my friends down on Christopher Street.

This is what I've got now so don't let me forget it. My bird in the hand is suffocating, or maybe...he just laid his head down and is sleeping, but his beak is really digging into me and I am bleeding. And this is how it looks from my side; a busy boy just trying to make things right. There's only so much rock and roll can do. I'm falling off the wagon onto you. The moral of this story is there is no moral really. Now you can be free which is much more scary. Let me back up from you just a little, a little bit; I'm gonna try to stand still until I don't walk so stiff. And what it is about you that keeps me, that draws me in? I thought I was all done with that but it seems all I do is begin, again and again. There's only so much rock and roll can do.

Tiger 03:35
My heart fills my ear as I lie on my side. I did what I thought was right at the time. I gave you the options, I thought I was fair. I spoke clear and cool like I just did not care. This winter bed is cold as I wake up at dawn. I realize now that I may have been wrong. Love is not a lamb that you show out the door; it's more like a tiger asleep on the floor. Where did you go to? Where have you been? Is there any chance we'd get together again? Your towel's on the shelf. Your toothbrush in place. There's wine in the kitchen all set just in case. I woke up the tiger and it ate up my soul. I claimed my independence and the claim took its toll. This winter bed is cold as I wake up at dawn. I realize now that I may have been wrong.

Driving down that bumpy mountain road. Burying you in the bottom of my pocket. You are heavy blasting. An unearthing. Tom Verlaine singing see no evil. I will take it on the chin, pretend I don't need anything. And I might do it all again even if it feels like I'm missing a limb...Jonathan Richman lives on the astral plane. The same one where I go to meet you again and again. Sneaking outside to look at the full, pretty moon. Are you looking at it too now from your little room?...What did I give up for a little solid footing? I still have a sad sense of things early in the morning.

about

Released in 2009: “Terrifically nervy, riff-charged tracks… a classic old-school guitar pop record.” –Jonathan Perry, The Boston Globe
“As many hooks as a pirate family reunion.” – Bill O’Neill, The Boston Globe

“If Patti Smith had teamed up with George Harrison, it might sound like this. "Eiffel Tower" is full of desire and longing and wanderlust and boasts one of the best femme-pop hooks since the heyday of early ‘80s New Wave.”- Blurt Magazine

“…steeped in rock ‘n' roll classicism…echoes of distaff-tilting power pop a la Holly & The Italians, Blondie, Bettie Serveert…Throwing Muses and Juliana Hatfield, but there's an additional, enticing, litany of influences brewing too, ranging from the angular punk of Television to the brainy sonic extrapolations of Yo La Tengo to the vintage garage and pop of the British Invasion.”- Blurt Magazine

about

The Vivs Boston, Massachusetts

They say that if George Harrison, Alex Chilton, and Patti Smith had a three-way lovechild, she would be The Vivs. This Boston-based rock band plays driving, smart, and hooky post-punk/power pop. The Boston Globe hailed their 2009 CD as “terrifically nervy; riff-charged, and sharpshooter sure” and named it a top ten of the year. Blurt Magazine called the band “impossible not to fall for." ... more
